Enviroment Policy

  1. Policy Statement

Hamilton is committed to conducting its business in an environmentally responsible manner. We recognise that our manufacturing activities — including powder coat painting, electrophoretic lacquering, laser jet cutting, milling and polishing — have potential environmental impacts through air emissions, waste generation, energy use and resource consumption. We will minimise these impacts and comply with or exceed applicable UK environmental legislation and good practice.
The “Environmental Protection Act 1990” remains core compliance framework alongside other domestic requirements.

  1. Scope

This policy applies to all employees, contractors, visitors and operations at our premises. It covers the environmental aspects of our core activities including surface treatments, machining, material handling and product finishing.

  1. Legal and Other Requirements

We will identify and comply with all applicable environmental legislation, regulations and permits, including but not limited to:

  • Environmental Protection Act 1990 — duty of care for waste, nuisance, pollution prevention systems; proper storage and disposal of waste and hazardous substances.
  • Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 — ensures that activities with potential emissions to air, water or land operate under formal permits where required.
  • Water Resources Act 1991 — prohibits unauthorised release of pollutants into controlled waters.
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 — for safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals used in coating and finishing processes.
  • Waste classification and hazardous waste controls — we will classify, segregate and manage hazardous and non-hazardous wastes; maintain appropriate documentation and use authorised carriers and disposal facilities.
  • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations and producer responsibility frameworks — where applicable, for end-of-life electrical products and product-related waste streams.
  • Emerging requirements under the Environment Act 2021 including improved waste segregation and recycling requirements from 2025 onwards.

We will also monitor forthcoming legal changes and adjust our controls and training accordingly.

  1. Environmental Objectives

We will:

  • Reduce waste, especially hazardous waste, through source reduction, reuse and recycling.
  • Ensure safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and coatings to avoid spills, contamination and risks to the environment.
  • Operate air emission controls on coating and finishing areas to limit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dust and fumes.
  • Improve energy efficiency in production processes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Maintain records to demonstrate compliance with waste transfer, hazardous substance handling and emissions.
  1. Operational Controls

To achieve our objectives, we will:

  • Provide relevant training to employees on environmental responsibilities and correct procedures.
  • Maintain an up-to-date register of environmental legal requirements, permits and compliance deadlines.
  • Segregate waste streams (general waste, recyclables, hazardous wastes) and use appropriately licensed waste carriers and treatment facilities.
  • Apply best practices in powder coating and electrophoretic lacquering to minimise overspray and solvent release.
  • Install and maintain appropriate extraction or filtration systems for laser cutting and milling to capture particulate emissions.
  • Conduct regular inspections of storage areas, drainage, and process emissions to prevent pollution.
  1. Roles and Responsibilities
  • The Managing Director has overall responsibility for environmental policy implementation and performance.
  • The Operations Director is responsible for ensuring process controls, training and compliance with permits and waste controls.
  • All staff must comply with this policy, report environmental concerns or incidents and participate in training and monitoring activities.
  1. Monitoring, Reporting and Review

We will monitor our environmental performance annually and report the findings to senior management. Documented records will be maintained for waste transfer notes, hazardous waste consignment notes, training, emissions checks and corrective actions. This policy will be reviewed at least once a year or when significant changes occur in operations or legislation.

  1. Communication

This policy will be made available to employees, customers and regulators upon request and will be published on our internal notice boards and website. We encourage feedback to improve environmental performance.
